Baskets of Love

Helen has been making baskets for many years now.  Whenever we make trips to Nicaragua, we try to visit her and bring more of her work to sell back home.  Helen makes all of these baskets by hand from pine needles and colorful thread. Her parents abandoned her and left her to survive with her grandmother.  These baskets have long created a source of income that supports the two of them.

As you'll see from the pictures, Helen isn't a little girl anymore!  She has grown into a beautiful young lady and she dreams of becoming a police officer.

She will be going off to school and training soon, so we're not sure how much longer she will be making baskets.  However, we've been in contact with some of the ladies who live near her, who also make baskets.  We hope to be able to continue offering Baskets of Love that will provide opportunities for artisans to earn a fair wage for their work.

In all of our working relationships with artisans of Nicaragua, we are dedicated to the principles of Fair Trade.
